Washington Mayor Declares Public Emergency Over Flood of Illegal Immigrants From Texas
In a comical and astounding move, the mayor of Washington, D.C., a progressive, open-border, sanctuary city advocate, has declared a public emergency over the influx of immigrants into her city.
Muriel Bowser declared the emergency on Thursday, noting that the city has “received … 9,400 illegal aliens from the states of Texas and Arizona,” according to a report in the Epoch Times.
Bowser joins Chicago and New York City mayors in crying foul as Texas continues sending busloads of immigrants to cities and states that have led in promoting open border policies.
Republicans are astounded that Bowser would declare a state of emergency over the arrival of less than 10,000 immigrants when she advocates policies that have led to more than 100,000 immigrants crossing the border into Texas every month for the past 18 months.
Bowser referred to her situation as a “crisis,” complaining: “Our response involves how can we live up to our values and make sure we have a humane, efficient process to deal with a crisis not of our making.”
Bowser plans to create a new office — the Office of Migrant Services, to aid illegal immigrants arriving from the border states. Taxpayers will fund the offices’ work to the tune of $10 million. Bowser announced that “the city hopes to either use federal funding or be reimbursed for the spending.”
“A new system is necessary,“ Bowser declared, “so that our homeless services system can continue to function in support of D.C. residents and so that we can properly respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and provide a humane assistance to migrants.”
Republican Governors Greg Abbott (TX) and Doug Ducey (AZ) have no regrets and state the busing will continue until they receive a proper response from President Biden who has yet to visit the border.
Bowser has repeatedly petitioned the U.S. Department of Defense to send National Guard troops to assist with dealing with immigrants. The Pentagon denied those requests, stating that the National Guard does not have the staff or training to address immigration issues.
“I’m very disappointed in that,” Bowser said Thursday. “And I’m very disappointed in not having a federal site that we can use [to house immigrants].”
Bowser added that conversations with Biden’s administration are ongoing.
